Specification:

v  Experiment: To study the variation in potential drop with the length of a wire for a steady current.

v  Apparatus Required:

·         Potentiometer 4 Wire with Jockey Pencil

·         IC Regulated Battery Eliminator (2-12V 2A DC)

·         Plug Key One way

·         Voltmeter (EDM-80 5V DC Desk Stand Meter)

·         Rheostat 6” (Range: 50 Ohm’s/1.6A)

·         Connecting / DCC Wires.

v  Principle: By Ohm's Law and the characteristics of a potentiometer wire, the potential drop across any portion is directly proportional to its length. Therefore, potential gradient (k = V/l) should remain constant.

v  Procedure

1.  Set up the circuit: Connect the battery and the rheostat in series with the main wire. Connect a voltmeter in parallel to measure the potential difference across specific intervals of the wire.

2.  Pass a steady current: Close the plug key and adjust the rheostat to ensure a steady current flow through the wire.

3.  Record data: Use a jockey to tap the wire at various specific lengths (e.g.,60cm,120cm,180cm), and note the corresponding voltmeter readings.

4.  Calculate: Divide each voltage reading by its corresponding length to calculate the potential gradient (k).
