DCC WIRE To convert a galvanometer into an ammeter, you connect a very low-resistance wire—called a shunt resistance (S)—in parallel with the galvanometer. By placing a very small resistance (S) in parallel with the galvanometer resistance (G), most of the total circuit current (I) bypasses the galvanometer (\(I_{s}\)), while only a safe, small full-scale deflection current (\(I_{g}\)) passes through the galvanometer. The resulting parallel combination acts as an ammeter with a very low effective resistance, allowing it to be connected in series in a circuit without altering the main current.
