SPECIFICATION: A diode is a unidirectional semiconductor device, i. e, it permits the current to flow through only in one direction. When the p side is connected to the positive terminal and n side to the negative terminal, the diode will be forward biased. In forward bias the diode offers low resistance to the current. In a diode, only a few tenths of a voltmeter (0.7vV for silicon) of forward bias is required for appreciable current flow. In the forward biased condition the current should be limited within the specified value by using a series resistance, known as current limiting resistor. A high current may burn off the diode. The reverse diode current is very small, usually in the range of microamperes. In such situation the series resistance may be removed.
